GST Rate Change-govt slashes GST on mass use items

Apart of bringing down rates, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council also exempted GST on sanitary napkins, rakhis, fortified milk and idols of deities made of stone, marble and wood.GST Council on Saturday reduced tax rates on over 50 items including refrigerators, washing machines and small televisions, which would now be taxed at 18 per cent, down from the current 28 per cent.

The move to cut rates by the GST Council in its 28th meet will cheer the middle class ahead of elections in key states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Two simplified forms – Sugam and Sahaj – were also approved by the GST Council for B2C and B2B taxpayers for easier return filing.

List of items exempt from GST:

  • Sanitary pads.
  • Saal leaves.
  • Raw material used in brooms.
  • Raakhis, without any precious metals.
  • Commemorative coins circulated by the RBI or government.
  • Deities made of stone, marbles or wood.

Items reduced tax from 12% to 5%:

  • Handloom dari
  • Fertiliser grade phosphoric acid

Items reduced tax from 28% to 18%:

  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Vaccum cleaners
  • Food grinders,
  • mixers Shavers,
  • hair clippers
  • Storage water heaters
  • Electric smoothing irons
  • Water cooler
  • Ice cream freezer
  • Refrigerators
  • Hand dryes
  • Cosmetics
  • Perfumes
  • Scents
  • Paint
  • Varnishes
