India joins Australia Group,Bolsters NSG claim

India on Friday joined the Australia Group which aims to stop the development and acquisition of chemical and biological weapons. After the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and the Wassenaar Arrangement (WA), the membership in another of the four major export control regimes is expected to give India a leg-up in its bid to secure a berth in the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group.

“There was very strong support expressed for India’s membership at the June 26-30, 2017, Australia Group Plenary, after which consensus was reached intersessionally. India then reaffirmed its intention to join the group,” said the group on Friday.

“India’s entry would be mutually beneficial and further contribute to international security and non-proliferation objectives,” said the external affairs ministry in a statement.
